Young: Support for public schools once again blunts bad idea

Young: Support for public schools once again blunts bad idea: "Support for school vouchers, touted as miles wide, always reveals itself to be microns deep. That is evident every time leadership tries to force the issue in. It's evident in the way proponents avoid the word “voucher.” It's evident in the way they downplay the issue on the campaign trail.

When the roll is called, sufficient numbers of lawmakers cannot swallow the idea of diverting scarce dollars into private and church schools.

The same goes for lawmakers who worry that tax dollars would be handed out without the type of accountability they expect from public schools. (As for private schools, those institutions want no part of that accountability system or any of the strings attached to a government program.)"
