The pressure to forge a school finance compromise was on Thursday, as lawmakers faced imminent deadlines to overhaul the Texas tax structure.
House and Senate tax negotiators met publicly Thursday, for the first time this week. Negotiators from each chamber outlined their proposals, then adjourned without discussing how they could bridge the differences.
Optimism seemed to diminish considerably, but Republican Sen. Steve Ogden, who has led the Senate tax-writing effort, said he remains hopeful an agreement can be reached.
The session ends Monday, but bills must be considered before midnight Sunday. Neither chamber can take up any tax bill for 48 hours after being signed by conference committee members and printed, which could take several hours."
