Negotiators down to the wire

AP Wire | 05/26/2005 | Negotiators down to the wire: "'Time's getting real short,' said Ogden, R-Bryan.

The session ends Monday, but bills must be considered before midnight Sunday. Neither chamber can take up any tax bill for 48 hours after being signed by conference committee members and printed, which could take several hours.

Lawmakers want to cut local school property taxes and replace them with an array of new consumer and business taxes, such as increased sales, cigarette and alcohol taxes.

They also want to restructure classroom spending, giving schools about $3 billion more for spending on new education initiatives, such as a teacher pay raise."
