Clock ticking on special session

News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | LOCAL NEWS | Clock ticking on special session: "The House and Senate must reach a compromise by then if they are to pass public school finance and property tax relief bills known as HB 2 and HB 3 during this First Called Session of the 79th Legislature. As of Wednesday, whether the bills will pass is anyone's guess.

On Wednesday, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst got to do something he rarely does – cast a tie-breaking vote. The Senate was divided on whether to raise business taxes to pay for education. Dewhurst's vote helped kill the idea.

The House and Senate can still raise a host of consumer taxes.

A few days earlier, the House voted down a payroll tax amendment also designed to bring more businesses into the tax equation."
