Dems insist DeLay return donation
DallasNews.com | News for Dallas, Texas | Washington: "Democrats demanded Wednesday that House Majority Leader Tom DeLay return a 'tainted' contribution from a Kansas energy firm that recently told a judge the donation was intended to gain access to Mr. DeLay to seek his support on a regulatory matter.
A DeLay spokeswoman didn't immediately respond.
In May 2002, Westar Energy gave $25,000 to Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee that Mr. DeLay created to elect more Republicans to the Texas House. Company officials said in court documents that they had been told to do so, but they didn't say by whom.
Soon after that, two company executives played golf with Mr. DeLay at a resort in Hot Springs, Va.
Internal company memos uncovered during a fraud investigation of a former Westar chief executive show that a company lobbyist viewed the donation as a way to ensure access to a key lawmaker and that executives were initially skeptical of supporting a Texas committee they'd never heard of."
