Perry: Lawmakers to feel heat
Star-Telegram | 06/01/2005 | Perry: Lawmakers to feel heat: "Gov. Rick Perry said Tuesday that Texas legislators will endure a 'long and uncomfortable summer' if they don't get beyond their disputes and pass school-finance legislation in a new session.
Standing next to the leaders of the Texas House and Senate, which deadlocked on the landmark legislation, the governor touted successes from the just concluded 79th session, including asbestos-lawsuit changes and transportation funding.
But he said he will not try to gloss over the Legislature's failure to pump billions more into education and significantly cut school property taxes.
And Perry said that if an agreement is reached in advance, he will consider calling a special legislative session, which can last up to 30 days. Otherwise, legislators will have some explaining to do, Perry said.
'If they don't want to work to finish the job,' he said, 'they should make plans for a long and uncomfortable summer.'"
