Lawmakers unsure why med school funding evaporated
El Paso Times Local news: "El Paso's lawmakers were unable as late as Tuesday to explain how they failed to get full funding for El Paso's four-year medical school during the 2005 Texas Legislature despite two of them holding key positions on finance and appropriations committees.
All they know is that House Speaker Tom Craddick, R-Midland, pulled the money for the school out of the state budget bill at the 11th hour before the regular session ended.
The rumors on what went wrong began swirling shortly thereafter, blaming the speaker for being mad at the El Paso delegation, looking at Texas Tech higher-ups for allegedly competing internally against El Paso's funding request, and even blaming a legislator's style for provoking the catastrophe."
