A great day to celebrate in Abilene

Abilene Reporter News: Columns: "Friday's humid and blustery atmosphere must have felt and smelled like a gigantic sigh of relief for Abilene and Big Country residents.

The sigh, aaaaah, was caused by mostly good news from the Pentagon about Dyess Air Force Base, mixed with some bad news. However, our cup is more than half full, no matter whether you are an optimist or a pessimist.

Overall, the Pentagon recommended growth for Dyess, and that should have a positive ripple effect in Abilene area. That is, of course, assuming that the Base Realignment and Closure Commission approves and passes on the recommendation to President Bush, the president approves and finally, Congress approves. We should know our fate by about the end of the year.

I'm optimistic.

The Pentagon wants to bring Ellsworth (no relation) Air Force Base's 24 B-1 bombers to Dyess. Those B-1s would raise Dyess' number to 60."
