Bunker Mulligan » BRAC: "Since the release of the BRAC list this morning, every news commentator and politician has used the phrase, “…largest employer in the state/city.” Or, “Thousands of jobs are being eliminated.”
Actually, those jobs and the people filling them do not belong to the city or the state. They are Federal jobs, most of them military jobs. Eliminating those jobs in a particular area does not throw those people out on the street and onto the welfare rolls. The military folks will get transferred, along with their jobs. The civilian workforce will either transfer or be given first choice on other civilian job openings within the military system. Or they will refuse to move and stay where they are, looking for another job.
Yes, some of those low-paying non-appropriated funds jobs will be lost, but most of those are filled by military dependents anyway.
What will be gone are the tax revenues and money spent by those folks."
