Criminal Cases, Civil Lawsuits and Key layers in the Controversy about the 2002 Legislative Races
Clean Up Texas Politics | Austin American Statesman: Criminal Cases, Civil Lawsuits and Key layers in the Controversy about the 2002 Legislative Races: "The 2 1/2-year controversy over the use of corporate money in the 2002 legislative campaigns shows no signs of ending soon.
It likely will be months, if not years, before the legal issues will be resolved.
Last fall a Travis County grand jury indicted three individuals with the Texans for a Republican Majority political action committee and eight corporate donors, accusing them of violating the state's ban on using corporate donations for campaign activity.
Several lawsuits also have been filed seeking damages from an array of corporations and groups, including Texans for a Republican Majority, the Texas Association of Business and the Law Enforcement Alliance of America.
Current law forbids the spending of corporate and union money on campaign activity, but it allows a political action committee, such as Texans for a Republican Majority, to spend it on administrative expenses.
