Keep politics out of base closings
The Galveston County Daily News: "The country’s military leaders say they could save $5 billion a year by closing bases that are no longer needed.
Our political leaders ought to let them.
The reaction of Texas politicians to the proposal to close unneeded bases was predictable.
The governor created a “strike force.” The state’s senators started a tour.
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, a champion of small government, issued a statement condemning the proposal to close the naval station at Ingleside.
No one wants to see a military installation in his hometown or home state close.
But the truth is that the military’s projections are conservative. People in this country probably are paying a lot more than $5 billion on bases that don’t do much to protect the nation."
