Houston Community Newspapers Online - The Courier - 07/17/2005 - Hispanics growing force in county: "In just a few years, according to officials, Hispanics will be the dominant population in Montgomery County, as well as Texas, making their mark in all aspects of life, including culture, schools and politics.
This growing, vital force changing the face of Montgomery County is made up of thousands of men, women and children leaving the homes of their ancestors in Mexico and Central America for the shimmering promise that they can make things better for themselves and future generations.
But in order to realize their hopes and dreams, these newcomers must find a way to integrate into the American mainstream. They must find a way, according to local businessman Marcos Valdez, to reach the point where they are no longer 'living in the shadows.'
Right now, however, that path is difficult to find.
'How do we get them assimilated into our American society? That's the real question we have yet to answer,' said Valdez of the increasing number of immigrants. 'We need to make them legal, so they can become a full, functioning part of our society. Otherwise, the situation is not good for me, and it's not good for you.'"
