Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst called in the chief lobbyists for the oil and gas and chemical industries in Texas to warn them to drop their campaign to defeat the franchise tax changes in the House and Senate bills. Many of those companies now avoid the franchise tax by taking advantage of loopholes.
According to those present at the meeting, Mr. Dewhurst threatened to make the companies and their representatives 'poster boys' for killing education and tax reform if the Legislature fails to adopt legislation that would revamp school finance, enact new education improvements and trim property taxes. "
