The Red State: Dark Clouds Over Texas

The Red State: Dark Clouds Over Texas: "It was supposed to be a day to savor accomplishments, but most of the talk on the final day of the 79th legislative session Monday was about the job left undone.

'I like serving in the Legislature, but right now I'm not proud to be a state representative,' said Rep. Rob Eissler, R-The Woodlands, of lawmakers' failure to agree on a new school finance plan that would have cut property taxes.

'I see dark clouds looming, and there's no way we can sustain the state in the condition we're leaving it in today,' said Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston.

The Senate and House were gaveled to a close within minutes of each other about 6:50 p.m. after a flurry of huddling failed to resurrect a judicial pay raise that also would have given legislators an increase in their pensions.

'The judiciary is in a state of danger of losing good, qualified judges because we are grossly underpaying our judiciary,' said Sen. Robert Duncan, a Lubbock Republican who sponsored the pay-raise bill."
