Politcs imperils El Paso's medical school funding
El Paso Times Local news: "Politics in Austin will soon decide the fate of the funding needed to get El Paso's four-year medical school in operation, said state Rep. Joe Pickett, D-El Paso, who is in a key role on the House Appropriations Committee.
Pickett said the outcome depends largely on how legislative leaders interpret the governor's concerns that the state budget is getting too big. But time is running out because the Texas Legislature will adjourn Monday and isn't due to conduct another regular session until January 2007.
'It's become very political, and I think it's real shaky,' Pickett said. 'The governor supported the full funding for the school. But after he said the (overall state) budget was getting too big, some of our other lawmakers started taking another look at things. Some of them say it's a lot of money to ask for, but they don't see the big picture."
