Lucio: State needs later school start
Lucio: State needs later school start: "Lucio: State needs later school start"
While much remains to be resolved in differences between school finance bills approved by the House and Senate, they share one thing in common: Both would require the school year to start no earlier than the day after Labor Day and end by June 7.
Currently most school districts start in mid-August.
My proposed post-Labor Day to June 7 school calendar amendment – based on years of research – not only has garnered support in both houses but also from Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn.
Research shows the school calendar configuration does not impact academic success. However, the majority of academically top-rated states in the nation begin school in late August or early September, and administer end-of-semester exams after the winter break.
These include schools in the top 10 states with the highest average scores on the ACT, and schools in eight of the top 10 states with the highest average SAT scores.
Top-rated Carrollton ISD recently adopted a school start date of Aug. 28. Irving ISD has started school later than most districts and administered end-of-semester exams after the winter break for several years, with no setbacks.
I disagree, but he does make some points. I still believe this was forced through at the behest of the tourism industry, with little real concern about how it might effect Texas education.
