Hypocrisy Toward D.C.: "This month's Hypocrisy Award goes to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) for her attempt to repeal the District's ban on handguns ['Mayor Rebukes Senators Fighting D.C. Gun Ban,' Metro, May 20].
Citing her need to fulfill her 'constitutional responsibility to oversee the District of Columbia,' Mrs. Hutchison also referred to the Second Amendment to justify trampling home rule.
Never mind the Republican rhetoric regarding states' rights, because the District is not a state.
Never mind that D.C. residents are subject to taxation without representation, the catalyst for our war of independence in 1776.
Mrs. Hutchison is more concerned about being able to keep a handgun in her nightstand than she is about the more fundamental right of every D.C. resident to representation in Congress."
