Craddick offers terse words in response to Dewhurst

AP Wire | 05/25/2005 | Craddick offers terse words in response to Dewhurst: "Tensions erupted Wednesday as House and Senate leaders took each other to task for the slow-moving school finance negotiations.

Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick chided Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, a fellow Republican who leads the Senate, after Dewhurst said the pace of school finance negotiations needs to pick up.

Gov. Rick Perry downplayed the tensions as an expected part of any legislative session.

The 140-day session ends Monday. House and Senate members have not agreed on a new education funding system, the hallmark issue of the legislative session.

Hope that they would reach a consensus seemed to dim with each passing day.

Both sides have called Thursday the last day to reach a compromise before it becomes too late to meet various legislative deadlines and adopt a plan this session. Perry has expressed reluctance for calling a special session."
