Bill threatens access to weather service
MyWestTexas.com - Local News - 06/12/2005 - Bill threatens access to weather service: "West Texans may lose access to one of the most trusted sources of weather information.
If a bill submitted by U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., passes, the National Weather Service would be prohibited from competing with private weather companies in the delivery of weather forecasts.
This would include the NWS' use of Web sites or radio. The lone exception would take place during times of severe weather when warnings could be transmitted over the radio.
The NWS would also be prevented from taking calls from the public about local weather conditions.
The reason for 'The National Weather Service Duties Act,' according to Santorum, is the need to restore the NWS' policy of non-competition with the private sector and get back to its core responsibilities of providing severe weather forecasts."
