Hutchison and Perry aides spar over Fort Hood funds

MySA.com: Metro | State: "A dispute over state tax dollars earmarked for road construction at Fort Hood triggered a sharp exchange Friday between senior aides for two Texas Republican heavyweights who may be in a rumble themselves next year.

A $20.5 million road improvement commitment that Gov. Rick Perry made last summer on the expectation of additional soldiers being assigned to Fort Hood still stands, his office said, even though troop strength there could actually decline.

'They are still getting the money,' Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt said.

That triggered a verbal volley between aides of Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who may challenge him for governor next year in the GOP primary.

A Hutchison aide questioned the use of tax dollars for road projects that may fall short of the original deal."
