Austin lawmaker says chief justice threatened him

Austin lawmaker says chief justice threatened him: "Rep. Terry Keel, R-Austin, repeated Thursday that Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson threatened to punish him politically if judges did not get a pay raise.

Wallace said Thursday that Keel misunderstood what he had said in a late-night, intense phone conversation during the final hours of the legislative session and that Keel hung up before he could correct that impression.

Keel disagreed with that version, saying, 'It's not something I'd misunderstand.'

The spat between two prominent Republicans could be more than just an embarrassment after the death of the proposed judicial pay raise Monday, the final day of the 140-day legislative session.

The state's constitution says a judge may be disciplined for casting 'public discredit upon the judiciary or administration of justice,' and the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct discourages 'inappropriate' political behavior by judges.

A complaint by a third party could force the Republican swearing match into the legal arena."
