Life without parole bill stalls in Texas Legislature
DentonRC.com | News for Denton, Texas | AP: Texas: "Death penalty critics are making a late push to get the Texas Legislature to give juries the option to sentence murderers to life in prison.
Texas leads the nation in executions, having put to death 344 inmates since the state resumed the practice in 1982. Texas has given lethal injection to eight inmates this year and 23 in 2004.
Currently, Texas juries can sentence capital murder convicts to death or life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. Of the 38 states that execute capital offenders, Texas and New Mexico are the only ones that don't have the life-without-parole option."
