Highlights Thursday from the Texas Legislature
DentonRC.com | News for Denton, Texas | AP: Texas: "Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst turned up the pressure on lawmakers Thursday, declaring that the Texas Senate won't approve any pending House-Senate compromise legislation until they've tackled school finance.
Education funding is the issue that brought legislators back to the Capitol for a 30-day special session, which ends Wednesday.
If lawmakers don't complete school finance, that leaves undone legislation that would increase judicial pay and lawmakers' pensions and potentially a bill that would limit the government's ability to seize personal property for the purpose of economic development.
'That's why we're here,' said Dewhurst, who presides over the Senate. 'Once we get school finance done ... then I'm going to permit us to take up and pass ... other pieces of legislation.'"
