Small group helped Hutchison decide | News for Dallas, Texas | Latest News: "'There are a lot of people who are breathing a collective sigh of relief today in Republican circles,' said Sen. John Cornyn, who had kept studiously neutral as the Perry-Hutchison contest loomed but quickly endorsed the governor as soon as Ms. Hutchison made her intentions clear.

He said he wasn't sure what tipped her thinking. 'I know it was an intensely personal decision.'

Even the timing of Ms. Hutchison's announcement Friday night raised questions. It came on the eve of Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn's announcement that she would challenge the governor and after word spread that Mr. Perry would call the Legislature into a special session to address Texas' school finance system.

If those events sped up her timetable, advisers weren't conceding it."
