Perry Steps in It: Texas needs climate of inclusion, not exclusion
DallasNews.com | News for Dallas, Texas | Opinion: Editorials: "We gave Gov. Rick Perry the benefit of the doubt when critics started hopping all over him for journeying to a Fort Worth Christian school Sunday to sign a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. Many candidates go to houses of worship to line up votes.
But the governor's remarks that day about gay and lesbian soldiers have set off a firestorm in the 'blogosphere' and around the e-mail world. And we worry that his 'Hit the road, Jack' message could come back to harm the state.
As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Bud Kennedy, Mr. Perry was asked how he 'would tell Texas gay and lesbian war veterans that they can't come home from war in Iraq and get married.' The governor replied, 'I'm going to say Texas has made a decision on marriage, and if there's a state with more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's where they should live.'"
