Clean Up Texas Politics | Rick Casey: The Virtue of Craddick: "Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick has his critics.
Senators and pundits are beating up on him as the lead villain in the state's public school financing melodrama, the stubborn 'Tominator' whose unwillingness to compromise with Senate leaders doomed all efforts to forge a new tax system for education.
They're right, of course, but they're being so negative about it.
I prefer to think of Craddick as the embodiment of one of the bedrock virtues of politics.
In Texas parlance, he 'dances with them that brung him.'
Sen. Simon Cameron of Pennsylvania put it a little more crudely about 150 years ago.
'An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought,' he said."
