Legislation banning gay marriage signals politicking to come

News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | HEADLINES | Legislation banning gay marriage signals politicking to come: "It is one of the perks of being governor to use bill signings as photo ops and an opportunity to drive television news stories. But last week's ceremonial signing went way beyond a typical photo op.

Gov. Rick Perry signed one bill requiring parental consent before a young girl could get an abortion. The second signing was pure show business because the signature was unnecessary. He signed a legislative resolution putting the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions on the ballot for November 2006.

The signing signaled the unveiling of the so-called “Restoration Project.” The project is an effort to use churches and pastors to register an additional 300,000 evangelical voters. The assumption is that the evangelicals would support Perry over U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas."
