Life without parole passes Texas House hurdle

Life without parole passes Texas House hurdle: "Lawmakers in the No. 1 death penalty state tentatively voted Tuesday to give juries the option of sentencing murderers to life in prison without parole.

Death penalty foes hope it will reduce the number of executions.

Currently, Texas juries can sentence murders to either death or life in prison with the possibility of parole in 40 years. Of 38 death-penalty states, only Texas and New Mexico lack a life-without-parole option."
