Hutchison takes toll on Perry
DallasNews.com | News for Dallas, Texas | Washington Columnist Todd J. Gillman: "Proving that some people will fight about anything, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison provoked Gov. Rick Perry into a tiff about tolls after oh-so-indirectly accusing him of planning to slap them on existing freeways.
It started with a seemingly innocent amendment to a federal highway bill. Tuesday night, the Senate adopted language from Ms. Hutchison to repeal the right of states to put up tollbooths on existing interstates.
It was a barely veiled shot at Mr. Perry, whose vision of a $175 billion Trans-Texas Corridor, a massive network that would take 50 years to finish, depends heavily on toll financing. And it was the second time in a week that one of his potential challengers hinted that he's overeager to push tolls – a stance that, if true, wouldn't endear him to voters or to the influential trucking lobby."
