Rio Grande Valley Politics: Memin Pinguin
Rio Grande Valley Politics: Memin Pinguin: "Most of you may not know about Memin Pinguin, a Mexican comic book character which was popular in Mexico back in the 50's. One of my aunts in Mexico had a copy of these comic books and I used to read them as a child. They made me laugh, but I was young and naive back then and didn't know that what I was reading was offensive to people. Why? Because Memin Pinguin is a dark monkey with big lips and big ears reminiscent of Sambo. Not sure who Sambo is either? Sambo was a children's book character created in 1899 by Helen Bannerman that depict a black child with big lips and big ears that is racially offensive and demeaning to African-Americans. "
