Committee may vote on HB 2 - The Daily Texan - State & Local

Committee may vote on HB 2 - The Daily Texan - State & Local: "Today the Senate Education Committee is expected to vote on House Bill 2 after a month of debate.

Committee Chairwoman Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, announced Thursday the committee was finishing a group of technical amendments and expected that the entire state Senate would be able to hear the bill next week.

Last Monday, the committee presented their substitute for the bill that the House passed in the second week of March.

'The overall structure of what we presented Monday is still intact and will remain so into tomorrow's vote,' Shapiro said.

While the Senate Education Committee has been hearing HB 2, the Senate Finance Committee has been simultaneously debating House Bill 3, which seeks to significantly reduce local property taxes and replace the revenue loss with an increase in the sales tax. The bill also addresses businesses' taxes, with the intention of closing the loopholes that currently allow five out of every six Texas businesses to escape paying taxes."

The very first time I got paid for putting words on paper was thanks to the Daily Texan. That was 20 years ago, give or take. I didn't get rich then, and while I've done a bit of freelance writing since, I'm still not rich. But I still have a soft spot in my heart for the Daily Texan, and when the legislature is in session they often match or surpass the reporting provided by the major Texas daily newspapers.
